If you’ve ever wondered how long it takes to write a novel, you’re not alone. Maybe you have an idea for a book but aren’t sure where to start. Perhaps you’ve already begun writing, but you’re struggling to find a consistent writing schedule. Or maybe you’re juggling a full-time job, family responsibilities, and everything else life demands while trying to finish your manuscript.
The good news? You don’t have to write thousands of words every day to finish a book.
You need a realistic writing goal and a plan for reaching it. That’s why I created the FREE StoryMetric™ Writing Goals Calculator. This interactive Excel workbook helps writers calculate their daily and weekly writing goals, compare writing schedules, and estimate how long it will take to finish a first draft. No complicated math. No unrealistic writing challenges. Just a practical tool to help you make progress.
What Is the StoryMetric™ Writing Goals Calculator?
The StoryMetric™ Writing Goals Calculator is a free Excel writing planner designed to help fiction writers turn a manuscript word-count goal into an achievable writing schedule. Instead of guessing how long your book might take, you can calculate your estimated completion time based on how many words you plan to write each week.
Choose your book length. Choose your writing pace. See your estimated finish date. It’s that simple.

How Does the Writing Goals Calculator Work?
STEP 1: Choose Your Book Type
Select the type of book you’re planning to write. The calculator includes four manuscript categories:
|
Book Type |
Typical Word Count Range |
Default Planning Goal |
|---|---|---|
|
Novella |
17,500–40,000 |
30,000 |
|
Category Novel |
50,000–75,000 |
65,000 |
|
Full-Length Novel |
75,000–100,000 |
90,000 |
|
Epic Novel |
100,000–150,000+ |
125,000 |
The calculator automatically displays the default word-count target for your selected book type. Word-count ranges are general planning guidelines. Publishing expectations vary by genre and publisher.
STEP 2: Choose Your Daily or Weekly Writing Goal
How many words can you realistically write? The calculator includes eight preset writing rates:
- 50 words per day
- 100 words per day
- 250 words per day
- 500 words per day
- 1,000 words per day
- 1,000 words per week
- 2,500 words per week
- 5,000 words per week
Daily writing goals assume six writing days per week, giving you one day off. Prefer to set your own goal? Enter a custom number of words per week instead.
STEP 3: Calculate How Long It Will Take to Write Your Book
The calculator automatically estimates:
- Your weekly word count: How many words you plan to write each week.
- Weeks to first draft: The estimated number of weeks required to reach your manuscript goal.
- Months to first draft: Your estimated writing timeline in months.
- Years to first draft: Your estimated writing timeline in years.
- Estimated finish date: A projected first-draft completion date based on your writing pace.
- Change your writing goal to explore how a different pace affects your timeline.
Compare Writing Schedules Before You Commit
Not sure what writing goal is right for you? The second worksheet lets you compare eight writing rates side by side.
For example, if your goal is to write a 65,000-word novel:
|
Writing Goal |
Approximate Time to Finish |
|---|---|
|
100 words per day, 6 days a week |
2.1 years |
|
250 words per day, 6 days a week |
10 months |
|
500 words per day, 6 days a week |
5 months |
|
1,000 words per week |
15 months |
|
2,500 words per week |
6 months |
|
5,000 words per week |
3 months |
These estimates assume consistent writing and do not include revisions. The best writing schedule isn’t necessarily the fastest. It’s the one you can sustain.
How Many Words a Day Should You Write?
There’s no single correct answer. Some writers produce thousands of words in a sitting. Others make steady progress by writing a few paragraphs each day. Consider what happens when you write six days per week:
|
Daily Writing Goal |
Words in One Year |
|---|---|
|
50 words |
15,600 |
|
100 words |
31,200 |
|
250 words |
78,000 |
|
500 words |
156,000 |
|
1,000 words |
312,000 |
Writing 250 words a day can produce enough words for a full-length novel in one year.
That’s the power of consistent progress.
