Regency culture became fascinated with ancient articles upon the publication of Henry Holland\u2019s book \u201cEtchings of Ancient Ornamental Architecture\u201d. This ushered in a period of interest in the producing of copies of ancient objects coming from Greece, Rome, and Egypt.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com\/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR2Hv_GfsKM285lGFo5P6PfHLRcZEQnkHPOY5LWW8ozR7iLGv35ajkydYI\" alt=\"\" width=\"177\" height=\"139\" \/>comfy?<\/p>\n<p>When the book, \u201cReproductions of Classical Furniture\u201d by designer Thomas Hope came out in 1807, the Egyptian reproductions using mainly mahogany, but also rosewood and zebrawood, became wildly popular in high echelons of society. The pieces had straight lines, and used symbols as decoration.<\/p>\n<p>In my home, we enjoy a pretty heirloom chair that once belonged to my husband\u2019s grandmother, who was born in 1903. The chair is old, but not Egyptian. It\u2019s been featured in many humble portraits taken in the Karsten home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/christianregency.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/103_51541.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1746\" title=\"103_5154\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/christianregency.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/103_51541-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/vanessariley.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/103_51541.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/vanessariley.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/103_51541.jpg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/vanessariley.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/103_51541.jpg?w=1280&amp;ssl=1 1280w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/vanessariley.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/103_51541.jpg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It has a problem, however, in that the green velvet-covered, thick-looking seat\u2019s stuffing is completely shot. It\u2019s:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Lovely to look at,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">Delightful to touch,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">But if you sit,<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">You\u2019ll find it\u2019s not much.<\/p>\n<p>I happened upon a recent guest stroking this chair\u2019s highly-polished carved wooden back.
